Description
This is a pair of weld in subframe connectors that will fit 1970-1977 Ford Mavericks and 1971-1977 Mercury Comet 2 doors. (contact me for 4 door versions) They are made from 1 1/2" x .120" wall square tubing. These subframe connectors will greatly increase the chassis rigidity by connecting the front and rear subframes. I personally build these connectors in my fabrication shop in West Texas. Made in the U.S.A!!!-The installation instructions are below:
-WELDING AND FITTING REQUIRED!!
Maverick /Comet Subframe Connector Installation Instructions:
This is set of weld in sub frame connectors. They will fit 1970-1977 Mavericks and, Comets. Due to the varying assembly line tolerances that these cars were made with, they may not be a perfect fit every time. Every effort was made in the prototyping process to allow them to fit as many years and models as possible. The dimensions which were settled upon were deemed the best for use. The instructions for installation are as followed:
The connectors are tack welded together for shipping. The tack welds are easily ground off with an angle grinder.
The best way to install these is with the use of a drive on vehicle lift in which all four tires are supported as the vehicle is raised into the air. Such a lift is found in muffler and automotive repair shops. If such a lift is not available the vehicle will need to be raised efficiently to allow welding of the connectors, either by placing the car on ramps or jack stands on a nice level surface. Jack stands should be placed under the rear differential housing and front lower control arms so that the vehicle weight is resting on its suspension. Failure to do this could cause the chassis to twist out of position and cause body alignment problems.
The connectors are marked right and left and top and bottom. The front of the connector is one with a 45 degree angle cut at the end. The right side connector is the one with the parking brake cable pivot tab welded to it. The right side connector will have the parking brake cable pivot tab facing the front, and on the inside of the connector.
The front of both connectors ( right and left) will weld to the bottom of the front subframe 9
1/2" back from the rear edge of the transmission crossmember floor brace. The rear of the connectors (right and left) weld to the bottom of the rear subframe next to the leaf spring. There is some freedom as to where the connector will weld to the front and rear subframes as far as the side to side placement goes. They can be welded right in the center of the front and rear subframes or at the inside or outside edge of the subframes.
3. Since the parking brake pivot hole will be covered with the right side subframe connector, a tab is welded to the inside front edge of the right side connector to allow the parking brake pivot to re-attach. The parking brake cables should be routed under the subframe connectors and the parking brake cable pivot should be hooked into the tab. Re-adjust the parking brake cable for proper opperation.
4.
Grind all paint, rust or undercoating from areas where the connector will weld to the front and rear frame rails. Use at least a 130 AMP mig welder for best results. Weld all vertical and horizontal areas with the connector where the connector touches the front frame rail seat brace and the rear frame rail. A good rust inhibiting primer should be sprayed. Followed by a good coat of paint.
